The Truth About Fluoride: What You Should Know
From the Office of Dr. Dennis K. Roman, D.M.D.
A Brief History
In the early 1900s, dentists noticed that kids in some towns had fewer cavities but strangely stained teeth. It turns out those towns had high levels of natural fluoride in their water. By the 1940s, research confirmed that adding small amounts of fluoride to public water could safely reduce tooth decay without tooth staining and in 1945, Grand Rapids, Michigan, became the first U.S. city to do so.
The Undeniable Benefits
Over 75 years of research shows that water fluoridation can:
- Reduce cavities by 25–40%, especially in children
- Protect smiles regardless of age or income
- Save families and public health systems millions in dental costs
Not only do we have strong data showing fewer cavities in fluoridated communities, but we also understand the chemistry behind it. Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel by remineralization and making it more resistant to the acid attack from bacteria. This isn’t just theory — it’s proven biochemistry. Fluoridation is one of the top 10 public health achievements of the 20th century, according to the CDC, and it remains one of the most studied and well-understood areas in medical epidemiology
The Unsubstantiated Hysteria
Despite its benefits, fluoride has been the subject of misinformation and fear campaigns. Claims linking fluoride to cancer, brain and bone damage, and thyroid issues have not been supported by credible science at the levels used in public water systems (0.7 ppm inthe U.S.). Fluoride is not a toxin at this level. It’s a protective mineral, like calcium or iron, essential for healthy enamel.
What Happens if We Remove It?
When communities stop fluoridating water, here’s what will happen:
- Cavities increase, especially in kids
- Low-income families are hit hardest
- Dental costs rise, along with preventable pain and infections
- Oral health disparities grow wider
Fluoride in water is a safe, smart, and simple tool to keep our teeth healthy for life.
